Bleeding the brakes

I noticed the front brake on my '97 Savages feels spongy so I think it is due to bleed the brakes. After looking at the Clymer manual, it looks straight forward and I am thinking of doing it myself. I am wondering if anyone who has had any experience with this can tell me if it is as "easy" as it looks and if they have any comments, suggestions, and/or caveats. Also, to make it easier, I figure I'll need a vacuum pump (I saw what one at JCWhitney for around $35) and brake fluid. For the brake fluid, does it matter if I get DOT 3 or 4? What is the difference? I still have the original brake fluid and was wondering if I should use the same type, however I don't know which type it is.
